This 3.9 mile linear hike took place on Wednesday, July 7, 2021. Participants were my cousin Ron Calabrese and myself.

This hike was supposed to take place in Spring of 2020 with the

POPUMC Hiking Group.

However, COVID 19 made us cancel this one. Then Ron and I had to postpone this hike from June 30, 2021 to July 7, 2021 due to extreme heat. But we were able to pull it off today.

We met at the Purcellville, VA depot at 8:00 AM, left Ron's vehicle there, then shuttled my vehicle around to VA704 at Hamilton Station. According to the

W&OD Trail Distance Calculator

the distance for this hike would be 3.9 miles. We wanted to get done as early as possible to avoid the increasing temperatures as well as to get back to Ron's vehicle before the two hour parking limit was up.

As far as logistics goes the only place to park a vehicle at the western terminus is in one of about thirty public parking spots near the terminus. During the week parking is no problem. However, on weekends these spots go quickly. If you don't arrive before 7:00 AM, you will be out of luck (unless you happen to catch someone leaving). And the police do patrol the lot so they will know if you exceed your two hours.

Same goes for the Hamilton Station end. The old depot building is occupied by a woodworking company so I did not feel comfortable parking in their lot. There are about twenty-five parking spots along the shoulder on VA704. Try to park under the VA7 overpass as your vehicle will be cooler and drier. I have personally seen VA state troopers ticketing vehicles that were partially on the pavement along this road during a busy Saturday afternoon. So again, if you don't get here until after 7:00 AM on a weekend, you probably won't find any available parking (unless you happen to catch someone leaving).

We started the hike around 8:15 AM. There were a good number of people on the trail for a weekday. We talked about this and that. We saw mostly bicyclists today. Also a number of runners and what looked like a cross country team. We only saw 5 or 6 hikers, most of whom passed us. The trail itself was in good shape. It could use some weed whacking and lopper work along the edges as foliage was hanging over the trail edges. Some of this foliage had stickers on them.

So we finished around 9:30 AM. Let's see, 3.9 miles in 1 hour and 15 minutes, not bad. We were both wringed in sweat when we finished. The temps were in the low 70's when we started, were in the low 80's when we finished and would climb to a sizzling 95 degrees by mid afternoon. This was a very pleasant hike. Just take into consideration the parking logistics and you will have a nice time on this rail trail.
