This hike occurred on Saturday, October 5, 2019. Participants were Clayton Limbaugh, Tom O'Brien, Mary Gordon, Jessica Lowry and Mike Calabrese.

It was a lot cooler this morning, 47 degrees, than it was for our last 5 or 6 hikes. But it was a great day to get out on the trail. As usual we met at the

parking lot and drove from Manassas, VA to just south of Warrenton, VA. This was our first hike in Fauquier County and it took us close to an hour to reach the trailhead at Whitney State Forest. Our next 2 hikes will also be in Fauquier County.

I did not have a particular route planned so I asked the participants what they wanted to do. They said that they didn't care so I suggested the perimater trail. This trail was blue blazed. We saw white, yellow, red and green blazes in the park but I could not find what the names of the trails were with these colors. In fact, I didn't realize that our entire route would end up being somewhere between 2.5 and 3 miles along this blue blazed perimeter trail around the park until after we finished.

We saw scenic farm fields the first mile or so, then a dirt road, then we intersected with the Forest Service Road, which was yellow blazed. Clayton and I had to remove a layer as we were getting warm from hiking. Again I asked which way that the group wanted to go. They had no preference so I suggested that we take the most direct route back to the vehicles. It turned out that we would be on the blue blazed trail for the entire route The scenery was very nice on the way back. The leaves had not changed yet. And the temperature was inching up towards 60 degrees.

On this last leg we were hiking parallel to VA 684. We did hit one section of trail on the way back to the vehicles where the blazing was not very good. We missed a turn and had to discuss and then guess which way was the correct way. Thank God we guessed correctly. We got back to the vehicles around 10:15 AM and got back to the church around 11:00 AM.

This was a nice hike. There are numerous combinations of loops and linear hikes that one can take in this park. We saw 5 other hikers and 1 runner while here. It was a great day to be in the woods with my fantastic fellow hikers.
