This hike occured on Sunday, December 2, 2018. Participants were Tom O'Brien, Dave McIntyre and Mike Calabrese. This hike was supposed to occur on Saturday, December 1, 2018. However, since there was a strong chance of rain I asked the 2 hikers that showed up if they wanted to postpone the hike until Sunday, December 2, 2018 and go help make Related Content... In May, 2021 I did a video recon here when attempting to find the Little Bull Run Trail. breakfast at the church and help put up Christmas decorations instead. They agreed so we helped make breakfast for those putting up decorations, then stayed for awhile and put up decorations. We announced via email, on Facebook and in church that the hike was postponed until Sunday. Sunday at 1:00, again 2 hikers showed up. We drove Dave's vehicle to Silver Lake near Haymarket, VA. We started the hike around 1:45 PM. The restrooms were closed for the season but they had portapotties for us to use. The trail was VERY muddy. We hiked around the lake counter clockise. Temperatures were in the mid fifties during all segments of the hike. What was neat was that you could still see the water spigots encased by a big plastic pipe at various intervals in the woods throughout the hike. These were remnants of a former private campground that used to occupy this area between the 1960's and the mid 1990's. I remember camping here in the early 1990's. So we walked around the lake for about a mile, then hiked through an equestrian center for about a mile, crossed the entrance road, then hiked through woods, open space and around a quarry for a mile. We then hiked over the dam for the lake, a short portion of the entrance road and some nice woods trail for about a mile. Finally we ended up right where we started near the rest rooms. This was the perfect length hike. It was long enough that you didn't feel awful at the end of it but long enough that your legs felt like you had a good workout. The overcast skies were nice and even gave way to a bit of sun This was the last hike of 2018 for the POPUMC Hiking Group. We have a list Related Ad... of hikes ready for 2019. I look forward to hiking many more years with this group.
