This hike occured on Saturday, February 2, 2019. Participants were Clayton Limbaugh, Steve Butterfield and Mike Calabrese.

I was contacted by numerous hikers that said that they wanted to hike on Sunday instead of Saturday because it would be warmer on Sunday. I said that if no one showed up on Saturday, that I would be there on Sunday to lead this hike. Clayton and Steve showed up on Saturday so we had the hike on Saturday.

It was 16 degrees when we left POPUMC at 8:00 AM for Braemar Village Center, Bristow, VA, where we would start and end this hike. We agreed to do the 4.5 mile loop option of these trails. We walked through the shopping center, onto the asphalt trail along Sudley Manor DR for a short distance, then turned left onto the north bank of Broad Run Trail.

The trail was mostly snow covered and not muddy like it has been on the last 4 hikes that we have done. We followed the Broad Run Trail for about a half mile. The snow and the creek made for a nice winter scene.

When we got to Linton Hall RD we walked parallel to it for a short stint, crossed a bridge missing some of it's railing, then went under the Linton Hall RD bridge along with Broad Run. We then traveled along the eastern side of the Linton Hall School/Church/Convent property for about a quarter mile. We came across another bridge that had been blocked but walked across it anyway. We think that it had moved from it's foundation due to recent rains and flooding.

We then hiked another quarter mile and, right before we got to Victory Elementary School, turned left onto a 'private trail'. I think the HOA's just call them that so they won't be liable if someone gets hurt along it. I have never seen anyone on these 'private trails' ask if I lived there or not.

After hiking about a quarter mile along the the 'private trail' we turned left onto Sudley Manor Drive, hiked back to the shopping center and the end of the hike. We had coffee and doughnuts at Dunkin, then returned to POPUMC. This was a great hike. I just may hike it again tomorrow with those that wanted to hike it on Sunday.

I announced in church on Sunday that, due to some requests to have this hike on Sunday, February 3, 2019 when the temperatures would be in the 50's compared to the 20's on Saturday, that I would hike it again with whoever showed up. Dave McIntyre and Randall Bartlett showed up.

We left POPUMC promptly at 1:00 PM, got to Braemar Village Center in Bristow, VA by 1:30 PM and immediately started the hike. All was well until we hit the dirt and gravel trail along Broad Run. What was frozen yesterday and become a muddy mess today. We were sliding all over the place, our shoes and pants were getting muddy and we all came close to falling on our keisters a few times.

At one point we just started walking in the woods when we could because the footing was better there. These trail conditions caused us not to make good time on this stretch. At one point I suggested that we do the 3.5 mile loop instead of the 4.5 mile loop and everyone agreed. The only animals observed on this hike were a Herrin and some Canada Geese.

On the final stretch back to our vehicle along Sudley Manor DR we found an abandoned bucket. We used it to pick up trash on the way to the end of the hike. What is sad was that we filled the bucket up with trash. Randall took the bucket home. Anyway, yesterday we had cold temperatures and a snowy but hikable trail. Today we had comfortable temperatures and a very muddy trail. Again, a bad day hiking is still better than a good day at work!
