This hike occurred on Saturday, December 7, 2019. Participants were Randall Bartlett and Mike Calabrese.

When I got to POPUMC I fully expected to be hiking this trail alone as a number of people had contacted me during the week to say that they couldn't attend. But when Randall B. stuck his head out of the church door to say that he was going to hike I was amazed. He was just ending an all night "lock in" event with the scouts that was like a sleep in event. I know that he was tired so I appreciated him coming along for the hike.

So we set off at a few minutes after 8:00 AM and made it to the Lost Mountain Parking Area at Sky Meadows State Park near Delaplane, VA at about 8:45AM. It was 28 degrees when we started this hike and 39 degrees when we ended this hike and started back to the church.

We started off hiking this loop trail counterclockwise. We did about .5 miles on the Rolling Meadows Trail. The tributary of Gap Run that we would cross at .5 and 3.5 miles was very low and easy to cross, unlike when Mike K and I re-conned this trail last March. We turned right onto the Lost Mountain Trail at around the 1 mile point. This trail started out as a gradual up on Lost Mountain until mile 1.7 . Then the ups got steeper. From that point and up until mile 2.2 we would ascend about 800 feet. That's pretty steep. At around mile 2.5 we would be "ridging" for awhile. The trail would go up for a bit, then down, then up again. We were not sure when the trail would start descending from the ridge. Finally, at around the 3 mile mark we started our descent.

At mile 3.3 we turned right and rejoined the Rolling Meadows Trail, crossed the Tributary of Gap Run again at mile 3.5, took a left turn at mile 3.8, then returned to my vehicle at around mile 4.5

Animals observed included a turkey buzzard, that allowed us to get very close to him and a flock of wild turkeys that we observed from far away. We also passed 2 solo hikers, one at the beginning of the hike and one at around the 3.3 mile mark. It seemed to both of us that the downhill portion of this hike from Lost Mountain was more gradual than the uphill portion. So if I do this trail again, I will do it clockwise instead of counter clockwise.

This was a good hike. There were some great views from Lost Mountain, we both got some good exercise and had some great conversations along the way. So we came to Lost Mountain, we conquered it and now it is found (I know that sounds corny but I couldn't think of any other way to end this trip log).
